1. What is the difference between compostable, biodegradable and degradable plastics?
Biodegradable plastics degrade due to bacterial activity. In order to also be classified as compostable, the degradation must meet certain specific criteria, such as biodegradation rates, maximum residue of material left at a given point in time, and the requirement that the material has no harmful effects on the final compost or composting process. Therefore, all compostable plastics are also biodegradable.
Biodegradable plastics are not compostable. Most products using labels biodegradable plastics, degrade (break up into smaller plastic pieces) due to physical and chemical influences. They are oil-based products that contain special additives that help them "break up". Biological activity is not an important part of the degradation of these products, or the process is too slow to achieve biodegradable or compostable classification (biodegradation usually takes many years).
2. What types of bags can I use in my green bin for composting?
You can only put compostable bags in green wheeled garbage cans and they must be Teignbridge District Council approved bags with light green, dark green text. Just because some bags say 'degradable' and 'biodegradable' does not mean they are compostable. There are many different types of bags on the market that all claim different things, some of which are unproven or the claim may be misleading. We ensure a high level of compliance monitoring of our green garbage cans to ensure we produce high quality compost with minimal pollution.
3. Where PLA comes from
Polylactic acid or polypropylene oxide (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch (in the U.S.), tapioca root, cassava flakes or starch (mainly in Asia) or sugar cane (in other parts of the world).
4. Does the finished PLA product contain BPA?
Of course not. PLA raw materials come from plants and we do not add any chemical additives during processing. It is our principle to keep it environmentally friendly and non-toxic.
5. How long does it take for PLA to degrade?
The standard degradation time under industrial composting conditions is 180 days.
6. What will PLA turn into after degradation?
Carbon dioxide and water.
7. Will it disappear with normal use?
No, absolutely not. PLA will degrade under composting conditions, and the service life of PLA products will be the same as other plastic products.
8. How to dispose of PLA products after disposal?
1. Composting; 2. Recycling; 3. Incineration; 4. Landfills
